England lose to France in World Cup quarter-final
England's World Cup dreams ended with a 2-1 defeat in the quarter-finals to defending champions France.
Harry Kane blazed a late penalty over the bar as England's hopes of reaching the semi-finals were dashed.
The match was a tight affair, with both sides having chances to win the game. France took the lead in the first half through Aurelien Tchouameni, but Harry Kane equalised for England from the penalty spot just before half-time.
The second half was evenly contested, but it was France who eventually found the winning goal. Olivier Giroud scored in the 78th minute to put France ahead, and England were unable to find an equaliser in the remaining minutes.
The defeat is a major disappointment for England, who were hoping to reach the semi-finals for the first time since 2018. It is also a blow to manager Gareth Southgate, who has been under pressure after England's poor form in recent months.
France, meanwhile, will now face Morocco in the semi-finals. The two teams will meet at the Al Bayt Stadium on Wednesday.
